Integrated Foundation Information System Selection,
Design and Implementation

Conducted needs assessments, workflow analysis, worked with foundation teams to set new prioritized system requirements, developed RFPs, evaluated vendor responses, conducted 5 year total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis, negotiated contracts, managed projects, established hierarchical classification schemes, implemented integrated Web hosted, LAN, WAN and client/server information systems for foundations, corporate giving programs and nonprofit organizations. Online Board Books
Replaced printed board and committee books with tablets and secure remotely hosted Web portals. Foundation staff compile and publish fully Web-based materials for board members, committee members, and  senior foundation staff. Content is accessible from iPads plus laptop and desktop computers. These systems permit both personal and shared comments. 

Streamlining International Grantmaking
Council on Foundations and TechSoup Global Project Manager plus Strategic Planner and Technical Advisor for the NGOsource collaboration of international grantmakers and the leading associations in the philanthropic community to establish an Equivalency Determination Information Repository (EDIR) on non-U.S. based NGOs. Conducted in-depth research, developed detailed operational and system requirements, published a request for proposal, and managed the review, selection and contracting process for the TechSoup Global host organization. Worked with the project team to conduct system development while assisting the legal team to secure IRS and U.S. Treasury Department approval of the NGOsource. See the FAQs. NGOsource launched in March 2013. As of December 2015 the service has conducted over 900 equivalency determination reviews for practically all of the largest U.S. international grantmakers supporting NGOs in 90 different countries. 

Global Grants Program Management
Managed the milestone-based Grand Challenges in Global Health grant program that to date has made grants of more than $436 million. The program implemented integrated "best practice" Web-based systems to solicit and process 2,000 proposals from researchers in 98 countries. A very high level of support was provided to all applicants to promote quality research. 6,000 critical peer reviews were conducted via the Web and in panel meetings by internationally renowned scientists.

Online Interactive Information Resources for Grantmakers and Grantseekers
Conducted in-depth research about available information resources for grantmakers and grantseekers. Identified key trends and how new technologies and demands for greater interoperability and powerful geo-mapping and analytical tools are impacting the development of next generation systems. Assisted the Foundation Center to develop interactive
maps and charts. This now includes overlays of 150+ different sets of census and other data.

Web Site Design and Development
Designed, developed, managed, Internet, intranet and Web portal sites for corporations, foundations and associations. Capabilities included: content management systems (CMS), membership management, event registration, online ordering from document libraries, automatic subscription to LISTSERV, technical support references, and broadcast e-mail subscription. Conducted comprehensive data analysis of site usage and developed reports of findings and recommendations that resulted in site improvement and enhancement.

Workgroup Collaboration
Designed, implemented and managed Dropbox, Central Desktop, Microsoft SharePoint
 and other workgroup collaboration portals that enabled team members at remote locations to share information and work together effectively and efficiently.

Knowledgebase Systems
Designed and implemented Web-based knowledgebase systems to provide target audiences with fully searchable access to extensive libraries of content. Data formats included documents, FAQs, reference links, presentations, quantitative data, images, and multimedia files. System usage was carefully evaluated to enable continuous process improvement. Both commercially available and custom developed application software was used.

Information System Evaluation and Strategic Planning
Conducted in-depth evaluations, requirements analysis, and strategic planning. Developed reports that included detailed findings and recommendations, phased project plans, staffing requirements, technical requirements, and projected costs.

Enterprise-Wide Office Automation
Designed and implemented enterprise-wide office automation systems to link thousands of workstations at sites worldwide to share common data and streamline operations. Selected, installed, configured and managed local and wide area networks running Windows and Macintosh computers in support of:

Strategic Planning for Philanthropic and Nonprofit Leaders
Developed and conducted seminars focused on the effective use of technology by grantmakers and nonprofit organizations. Conducted surveys and identified best practices in implementing technology to streamline operations and improve organizational effectiveness.

Grant Program Design and Administration
Identified and investigated exemplary programs that made effective use of technology. Conducted seminars to report findings and recommendations to educational policy-makers, legislators, chief state school officers, college presidents, curriculum coordinators, teachers, and grantmakers.

Reviewed grant proposals, conducted site visits, and provided strategic planning, training, and technical assistance services to grantees in the USA, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe.

Matching Gift and Workplace Giving Outsourcing
Conducted reviews of corporate internal matching gift operations, in-depth comparison and evaluation of matching gift and workplace giving service providers, and cost/benefit analysis. Developed findings and rationale for board review and approval. Negotiated contracts, and assisted in the development of standards for electronic feeds from service providers to grantmaking systems.

Wide Area Network System Design and Implementation
Provided technical consulting services to design, implement, and optimize wide area network including: client/server systems using Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Server, and Citrix MetaFrame/XenApp technologies. Implemented Virtual Private Networks (VPN) using broadband technologies.

Data Center Design
Designed data centers to serve 24x7 operations. Implemented complete data center monitoring and alerting systems to monitor all servers and network devices, Internet connectivity, AC power, temperature, humidity, program availability. Ensured availability of redundant servers and components for all critical points of failure plus backup generator in the event of a power outage.

Web-based Surveys
Designed and conducted Web-based surveys, conducted detailed cross-variance analysis of results and developed graphical reports with detailed findings and recommendations that resulted in improved systems and services

Electronic Publishing
Migrated a weekly publication to desktop publishing to streamline production, lower costs, and to enable on-line and CD-ROM publication. Developed and implemented strategies for broadcast e-mail publishing of newsletters, press releases, and reports.

Conducted strategic planning, product design, and marketing services to the providers of computer software and services. Conducted client satisfaction surveys, focus group sessions, and interviews. Developed targeted recommendations that resulted in product/service improvements and enhancements.

National Grant Reporting Standards
Assisted all major grants management software companies and the Foundation Center to establish and implement a national foundation eGrant data reporting standard. Enables foundations to report grant data to the Center using an electronic format more easily, accurately, and efficiently.
